Homemade Lavender Carpet Freshner

I was cruising the blogs Friday night on my laptop after having oral surgery and came across this great "recipe" over at Increasingly Domestic.  It's a recipe for Homemade Carpet Freshner.  I hate to admit that my carpet is probably less than "fresh" with having a dog and a little boy rolling all over them so alot of times I purchase the scented powder for vacuuming.  I have mostly hardwood floors but where I have carpet it gets heavily used and I always feel better if it smells good by using the scented carpet powder.

I love Lavender oil so I usually have a bottle here in the house and of course I had Baking Soda so I whipped some of this up today.  I have to tell you it worked great!  I think it swept up better than the store bought carpet powder and it gave the house a very nice light smell.

You will need:
Baking Soda
Essential Oil of your choice (I used Lavender)
Shaker Bottle
Table Knife

I didn't have a shaker bottle empty so I used a plastic Kool Aid container.  Obviously it doesn't have holes in the plastic lid so I just used a big nail and poked holes all over the top of the lid and it was perfect.

Pour desired amount of Baking Soda in your container.

Add essential oil and either shake it up or use a table knife and really mix up the oil with the soda--this is what I did.  Put your lid on the container and start shaking away.

I used mine on the carpet and the furniture.  I always am running the vacuum over the furniture so I figured I may as well freshen that up while I was at it.

Don't you just love quick and simple homemade items like this?  I know I do.

Enjoy!

  1. What a great idea! I have a few bottles of essential oils left over from my days as a massage therapist that I've always felt were going to go to waste--my favorite is grapefruit . . . I bet that would be SO GOOD to use for this! I'll be trying this out :-) Thank you!

  3. This is such a great idea! I love it. We have all hardwood floors but one big area rug in the living room that I am sure could use some freshening up! Thanks!

Also I wanted to say Thanks so much for the blog award! I am flattered. I know it has taken me forever to accept it, but I didn't want you to think I wasn't grateful for it. We have just been super busy since returning home from vacation. My brain is still in vacation mode! LOL! I will try my best to accept this week.

    Thanks again!

  4. Thanks ladies! I know you will all think this little concoction is great.

Rachel, I think this is a perfect way for you to start using up some of your leftover oils.

Jennifer, those little doxies couldn't possibly make a mess :) I know my Cocker Spaniel can do a lot of mess making for such a little thing :)

Jeana, I saw you were doing a Disney trip so don't think twice. I'd rather be on vacay too! Always hard to get back in the swing of things. Hope it was a blast!

  7. This is great. I just started using Lavender dryer bags instead of dryer sheets. I love out they scent my laundry so nicely. I found them at Trader Joe's. Then when the you have used the bag enough times, the lavender can be sprinkled on the carpet and vacuumed up. I will have to try your idea too, since most of the house is carpeted.
