. . . Homemade Laundry Soap . . .

Ok, so I have been seeing all these recipes for homemade laundry soap and at first I thought "Who is crazy enough to make their own laundry detergent?"  But, my son has terribly exzema and we have to be very cautious with what detergent we use.  The more recipes I read the more I realized that there might be something to this homemade soap---it would save me lots of money and it could help my son's skin immensely.  My sister laughed like crazy when I told her I was making it but I bet if she was saving money and getting hard to remove stains out then she'd be a believer too.

I know everyone will be asking if it works and I can tell you it works perfectly.  I even showed a photo at the bottom of my husband's shirt that had airplane grease on it and it took only 2 washings to get it out.  It was as black as black and after 1 wash the black was gone completely and it just had a small "wet" looking spot on it and after soaking it for just a little bit it came right out on the second wash.  Love it!

You will need:
1 Cup of Borax
1 Cup of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (Different than baking soda)
1 Bar of Ivory soap or Fels Naptha Soap
Essential Oil (I used lavender)
Use 1 to 2 Tablespoons for each load of laundry

*I don't have a HE machine but from what I have read it sounds like this is perfectly safe for them.  The Borax has  "HE Safe" printed directly on the box.

  2. I have a couple friends that make their own. I keep toying with the idea. I may now that I see how cute it is in the jar. Ha!

The Lemon cookies look fab. I need to make some.

  4. I will be anxious to hear if any of you make it and what you think! I know it takes a little more time but to have my son's skin feeling better and saving lots of money I don't mind.

  6. My son also has eczema, so I'm gonna have to try this. I've not found a free and clear detergent that I like.

  7. I just linked to you on my blog. I FINALLY got around to posting my laundry detergent!

I also found a great home made dishwasher detergent that actually gets the hard water cloudy-ness off of them! Hurray! (I posted that yesterday!)

Thanks for all your emails about this and thanks for sharing such a great recipe!

  9. I just found this, and I was wondering, when are you suppose to add the essential oil, and how much do you add? I love the idea of this, and will probably be trying it soon (if I can find that old, broken box grater!) but I really want it to smell pretty, too. Thanks! :)
